I found myself in a darkened theatre for the second night in a row (I am a bit of a theatre junkie) but the subject matter of the two productions could not have been more different! Last night was an edgy drama that had me squirming in my seat while tonight was a silly bit of fun that had me laughing out loud: Hale Centre Theatre's production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It is delightful! The story is rather preposterous but the singing and dancing are fantastic, especially the big production numbers "Toot Sweets," "Me Ol' Bamboo," and "Bombie Samba." I am always amazed at what the choreographers can do with such a small stage! Of course, all of the actors are unbelievably talented! David Smith is perfect as the eccentric Caractacus Potts, Will Breinholt and Abigail Edwards are endearing as Jeremy and Jemima Potts, and Megan Lynn Heaps is perfectly lovely as Truly Scrumptious. But, in my opinion, the show is stolen by the Vulgarians! Zac Zumbrunnen and David Guy Holmes are absolutely hilarious as the Vulgarian spies Goran and Boris. I laughed and laughed at all of their antics, particularly during the song "Act English." What can I say about the Baron and Baroness Bomburst? These characters are so completely over-the-top and Kyle Olsen (I absolutely loved him as Sydney Carton in HCT's production of A Tale Of Two Cities) and Ali Bennett are amazing with all of the physical comedy. I laugh just thinking about the song "Chu Chi Face!" The sets and costumes are a lot of fun and the flying car is pretty spectacular! Do take your children to see this charming show (but cover their eyes whenever the Child Catcher is on stage) if you are in the Salt Lake area. It runs though April 13.Wednesday, February 20, 2013
Phantasmagorical

I love going to the theater... Only I don't get to go often.
